We are pleased to announce a new, online edition of the NICAS colloquium on Thursday 14 October 2021 from 12.00 to 13.00 hrs. The colloquium will take place online through Microsoft Teams. During this Colloquium, the six new NICAS Research Associates will present their research of the coming year.

“Mapping the Present to Imagine the Future: Towards a Global Infrastructure/Ecosystem for Heritage Science”
Abstract:
In September 2021, NICAS launched the international project ‘A Global Infrastructure for Heritage Science’, made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The initial phase will map out the common ground between different cultures of conservation and find ways that interdisciplinary and international collaboration can be better used to preserve the material integrity of the object, its layered cultural significance, and its historical context. The international and interdisciplinary team of six Research Associates will introduce ourselves and our goals, which include identifying the major global challenges faced by the field now and in the future, and the opportunities that exist for more fruitful collaboration. We invite attendees to join the conversation and share their experiences, insights, and ideas.
Research Associate Team Bio:
Each Research Associate is responsible for different material specialisations. Tamar Hestrin-Grader, with a multidisciplinary background in historical performance practice, musicology, and art history, will focus on wooden objects, including furniture and musical instruments. Marie-Noëlle Grison, Art Historian, curator of prints and drawings, and printmaker, will be in charge of the inventory research in the field of paper, book and photographic materials. Annelena de Groot has a BA in art history and a MS focusing on conservation of textiles and technical research; always looking to connect disciplines, she will focus on the field of textile heritage during the project. Maria Laura Petruzzellis, Conservator of Modern and Contemporary Art and PhD candidate in art history will explore the field of modern and contemporary art. Gadis Fitriana Putri, emerging conservator of paintings and educator with an MA of cultural materials conservation, will focus on the aspects surrounding painting collections. Glennis Rayermann, a conservation scientist with a PhD in chemistry, will focus on glass, ceramic, stone and metal objects.
